ABC Mix-Up
Although being able to identify letters out of order is certainly an important skill, sometimes it is also okay for them to sing through the alphabet song to remember what comes next. Here is a quick game you can play with your child that is a precurser to putting words into alphabetical order.
Gather a set of letters, either all upper-case or all lower-case, and put them in a bag or pillowcase. (Magnetic letters work well for this, but you can also write each letter of the alphabet on a strip of paper.) Let your child shake the bag, and then pull out a letter. Set the letter on a long table or on the floor. Next, have your child out a second letter. Ask your child whether the new letter goes before or after the letter he pulled out first, and then have your child place the letter in that position.
Continue to have your child pull out letters and place them in order until all of the letters have been placed in order. The letters will need to be moved around often in order to fit in the new letters being pulled out of the bag.
Although you can certainly help your child sing from the beginning of the “ABC” song each time, try to encourage him to start in the middle of the song to determine where the letter fits in the sequence.
