Thumbs Up Preschool Rhyme Game | The Preschooler

Thumbs Up for Rhyming

My preschooler loves to give people a “thumbs up” when he likes something.  I am not sure where he picked up on that particular gesture, but it has become part of his regular forms of communication.  As his mother, I have to say that it is quite cute to see my four-year-old giving an adult two thumbs up.

It is this adorable trait and my son’s current obsession with rhyming, that gave me an idea for a game that combines the two.  It is very simple, and yet my son, at least, is entertained by it for as long as I will play it.  (In other words, my attention span is shorter than his!)

To play, just name two words.  If they rhyme, your child gives you a thumbs up.  If the words do not rhyme, your child gives you a thumbs down.  That’s it!

You can get creative and make up nonsense words, such as “loshy” and “doshy” or “pickle” and “packle”.  My little guy gets particularly excited about the words I make up.  He also likes to be on the creating side of the game.  I then give him a thumbs up or thumbs down based on the words he announces.  Either way, we have a lot of fun all while learning about rhymes!
