Write with Wax

I can remember as a child being very excited when I won a pen that wrote with invisible ink.  I believe it was because of the mystery and the feeling that I knew something my older brother and parents didn’t know.  I would write a secret message on a piece of paper and watch as my parents would act perplexed at not being able to read the secret message.  (I didn’t even have anyone else to show the message to, but I still loved the fact that they couldn’t read what I had written!)

Your child can experience this same mystery by using a plain, white candle.  Simply give your child a tapered candlestick and a piece of white paper.  Let him create a drawing of his choosing.  It can be as simple as a shape or as complex as a few words, depending on his ability. 

Next, let your child enjoy the mystery of the message.  He can present it to a  friend or family member as a magic trick.  Then, let him use watercolor paint to reveal the mystery.  Simply paint over the paper where the candle was used.  The paint will color the paper around the wax message.
