“Word World” Rhyming Game
I love it when my children ask to watch the show “Word World” that is broadcast on our local public television station. It is a wonderful show that teaches children many different concepts about letters, letter sounds, words, and sometimes even sentences. Usually, each episode also focuses on a lesson that utilizes problem-solving skills.
Since my children already like the show, I was delighted to find that the show has a web site with a game called, Frog’s Rhyming Game. It is a simple game that begins with Frog sitting on a rhyming machine. When the player clicks the mouse on the button that is on the top of this machine, a word forms on the front of the machine. Three more words then float out of the machine in bubbles. Frog announces each word as it appears, and players can use the mouse to roll over any of the words at any point in order to hear them again.
The object of the game is for players to click on the word in the bubble that rhymes with the word in the machine. If players choose incorrectly, Frog says the words together and points out that they don’t rhyme, but encourages children to keep trying. That word is then eliminated from the choices.
When a player selects the correct word, Frog celebrates and, again, says the words together. A quick animation then appears as a little reward for making a rhyming pair.
I really like that this game repeats the words frequently so that children are able to hear the sounds several times. I was also impressed by the non-competitive nature, and the fact that players are encouraged to keep trying. What a fun way to practice rhyming!
