Display Preschool Art | The Preschooler

Cupboard Art

When my oldest son was three-years-old, he attended a preschool two mornings each week.  Although the teacher would encourage him to visit the art center which was filled with every supply and accessory you could possibly need to create a piece of artwork, my son would have rather played with the trains and cars for the entire two-and-a-half hours.  The only artwork I received during that year were two or three pieces that every child was “made” to do as gifts for their parents.

That all changed the summer following that first year of preschool.  All of a sudden, my son was making projects left and right.  I was displaying them on my refrigerator in an effort to encourage this new passion.  However, my appliance looked as though someone had covered it with a quilt made out of paper, and artwork was constantly floating to the floor whenever the someone walked by or actually attempted to retrieve something from its innards.

While visiting a friend who also has several young children, I was amazed at how uncluttered her kitchen was.  While getting a glass from the cupboard, I noticed a picture hanging on the inside of the cupboard door.  I quickly surmised that my friend was displaying her children’s artwork inside her cupboard doors instead of on the refrigerator.  I have since adopted this same technique, and my kitchen looks much less cluttered, and yet I still get to enjoy my children’s artwork.
