Letters in My Basket

Here is a great game to play with your child to practice identifying words that have a specific letter sound at the beginning.  You may be familiar with the classic nursery rhyme song, “A Tisket, A Tasket”.  I have changed the words a little in order to make a game that is appropriate for preschool children who are ready for letter sounds.  All you need is a basket large enough to hold several small items your child will locate around your home.

Hand the basket to your child and teach him this song sung to the same tune as the original:

A tisket, a tasket;

Letters in my basket;

The letter B says “b”,

I’ll put it in my basket.

As your child sings the song, help him to find objects that begin with the letter “B”.  Of course the game can be played with any letter of the alphabet.  You may wish to do several letters each day or only one, depending on the interest of your child.  A great way to introduce the game is to go through the song with each of the letters in your child’s first name.  (If your child has a particularly long name, you may want to stick with initials.)
