No Crying at Preschool | The Preschooler

No Tears…and He Skipped!

My four-year-old attends a preschool program two mornings each week.  Last May, when the program ended for the previous year, my son was still whining and fussing about going to his classroom each and every day I dropped him off at school.  And although he is quite the clown once he warms up to a person, he has never been one for performing in front of groups.  So it was no surprise to learn that he would refuse to skip when the school met each day for a “meeting time”.

Given that we spent an entire year with the same crying routine at drop off, I expected nothing less when school began again this year.  I was shocked, to say the least, when he took off his jacket, hung it up in his locker with his backpack, and went right into his new classroom.  No tears.  No fuss.  Not even a goodbye!

When it was time to pick him up at the end of the morning, his teacher came out specifically to tell me that he skipped at meeting time.  At first I thought I had heard her incorrectly, and she was simply informing me that he did not skip, as was typical.  But then she went on to say that he was an excellent skipper!

Although some parents may be celebrating that their preschool child has learned the numbers or alphabet, I am celebrating that there were no tears, and he skipped!  I have been celebrating every Tuesday and Thursday morning for three weeks and counting!
