Fantasy or Reality?
Distinguishing between fantasy and realism is a skill that you and I are probably able to do easily, and without much thought. However, for a young child who has only had a few years worth of experiences compared to our decades worth, it may not be such an easy task.
Helping your child make the distinction is as easy as asking her to do so each time your read a story. Before a story is read, you can help your child use the pictures to determine if the story is real or fantasy; or, you can stop part way through the story and use what she has learned to make the same comparison. Of course, asking the question at the end of the story is just as beneficial.
After asking your child if the selection is make-believe or something that could really happen, be sure to ask her why she believes that is so. Is it a fantasy because the animals are talking or is it reality because a family could actually go to the beach and have a picnic if they wanted?
The more stories you ask these questions about, the more experiences your child will have in determining what is real and what is fantasy. Understanding the difference is a big step in comprehending the story.
