Scissors are for Paper

My son slowly entered the room.  His head was aimed at the floor, yet his eyes were peering up at me.  It was a look with which I am familiar.  This posture always gives away the fact that my darling child has done something he was not supposed to do.  He was hiding his hands behind his back which led me to believe something was broken, and he was about to reveal a precious item that was now in pieces.  When my little boy turned to face me, however, I immediately knew what he was hiding behind his back.  Scissors.

As I am sure you can now picture in your mind, the clue that gave away his story leading up to this pitiful entry was a large clump of hair that was now missing from its usual placement along his forehead.

“Scissors are for paper!”  This phrase has undoubtedly been uttered by mothers and fathers across the world on countless occasions.  There is some lure, however, among preschool children to use this everyday craft tool for cutting hair instead.  It is almost as though it is some sort of rite of initiation.  (Although I have been told it doesn’t always “take” the first time so future attempts are made.)

Although my son’s hair has since grown in (most of the way), a pair of scissors in his hand still makes me a bit nervous.  I continue to utter the famous phrase, “Scissors are for paper”.  One day, I suppose, he will remember the event and pass on the phrase to his own children.
