Ordering Ice Cream
It drives my husband crazy when someone says that my younger son is shy. He is quite an actor, and he can put on quite a show whenever he thinks he can get the attention. Personally, I believe this is why he will frequently pull out his “shy” act. This little skit stole the hearts of the ladies of our local ice cream shop one humid evening in July.
As we drove the short drive to “The Cottage”, my husband and I reinforced with our children that they would be ordering their own ice cream that night. Both boys seemed to be on board with this demand until it was time to order. Our older son easily walked up to the counter and ordered his Superman ice cream. When it our younger son’s turn, the experience was not quite the same.
Our son would only stare at his shoes while putting on an award-winning performance with his shy routine. Try as we may, the ladies at the counter and we, his parents, were not able to convince him to order his own ice cream. He went home in tears.
A few days later, we tried again. With the memories of an ice cream-less visit still fresh in his mind, the “shy” child magically disappeared, and an excited, eager-to-order little boy jumped up to the counter instead. That night, he too had Superman ice cream.
