Be a Narrator
I have never met anyone who didn’t laugh at least a little when they saw a movie clip that has been dubbed over in another language. I always wonder if the words that the narrator is saying in English are even close to those that are actually being spoken in the original language of the film. Your child may also get a chuckle out of a similar activity.
Choose one of your child’s favorite television programs and mute the volume. Tell your child that today, he gets to make all of the words for the characters. Let your child pretend to be the narrator while the program plays silently in front of him. If he is a little unsure, or if he needs and example, demonstrate how to be the narrator. Be sure to ham it up and have fun! The sillier you are, the more likely it is that your child will be willing to give it a try.
If you have more than one child, let each one take on the role of one of the characters, and don’t be afraid to join in as a character as well. Encourage your child to use different voices for the characters.
When the show has ended, ask your child about the story. Was it silly or was it serious? Did the story make sense? And most importantly, did you have fun being a narrator?
