Sidewalk Paint
Last week, my entire family took a trip from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma in order to visit our best friends. Although we were leaving three inches of snow in our wintry town, we were welcomed by rays of sunshine and moderate temperatures as we helped our friends get settled in their new home.
My husband and I were more than ready for a break from the normal work routine, but we weren’t sure how the kids would all behave together for an entire week. Fortunately, my friend had a secret recipe up her sleeve that entertained the kids for hours.
The recipe consisted of nothing more than cornstarch, water, and food coloring. (If you can, find non-staining coloring, such as Colorations Liquid Watercolors.) My friend didn’t even measure, but when she was finished, the paint looked like very watery, creamy paint. Here is the recipe she roughly followed:
Mix 1/2 cup of cornstarch with about 1/4 cup of water. Add paint to achieve the color you want.
Simply prepare the recipe in a small bucket your child can carry on her own, throw in a cheap paintbrush or two, and send her out the door. If there are any objects you don’t want her to paint, be sure to let her know ahead of time. However, the first rain shower washed the chalk paint off every surface on which our four children tried it. The paint worked particularly well on the sidewalks and an unstained fence.
The kids loved it so much, they ran out of paint on the first day after about an hour. They also requested more paint for the next several days. This is a recipe I am sure will be used a lot once the snow disappears from our own neck of the woods next April!
Note: I also found a recipe that adds 1 box of corn starch to this recipe. You can then put vinegar in a spray bottle, squirt your paintings, and watch them foam. http://www.handsonaswegrow.com/2011/06/outdoor-play-homemade-sidewalk-paint.html
