After having taken several long trips in the car recently, I have come up with a list of “Travel Do’s and Don’t’s” which I will try to remember for any future travel plans with small children.
- Do: pack small drawing activities that use water for writing.
- Don’t: take along a deck of cards marketed as a travel game, but includes a child-sized dry-erase marker that does not erase from car upholstery.
- Do: carry child-friendly snacks with you at all times. These are a great form of entertainment as well.
- Don’t: include small chocolate candies or gummy snacks that will melt and stick to anything and everything.
- Do: pack a change of clothes for each child with whom you are traveling.
- Don’t: pack these clothes in the bottom of the pile.
- Do: take advantage of spray on sunscreen for your children.
- Don’t: stand downwind while spraying the sunscreen unless you want your legs to be white only in the front.
- Do: include book recordings from the library as part of your children’s travel entertainment. They are both fun and educational.
- Don’t: sign out the unabridged versions or your children may learn more than you wanted them to.
- Do: pack DVDs as a back-up plan to the recorded books.
- Don’t: forget to make sure the discs are actually in the cases, otherwise you may be watching “Happy Feet” on continuous play the entire trip.
I am sure you have your own list of Do’s and Don’t’s so feel free to add to the list. We can all benefit from each other’s “learning” moments.

My two little boys are friends with a little girl who lives down the street. I babysit her on occasion because neither her mother nor father have family that live nearby. Her mother and I also have a friendship that has allowed us both to take part in many of the milestones each of our children have achieved.
Unfortunately, since both of their families live some quite some distance away, they

Last week, I was on the phone with a business associate. We were trying to have a professional conversation. I should have known better. In fact, it would be pretty safe to say that any conversation I attempt to have the on the phone, professional or not, typically involves two little boys following me around the house, asking me questions, complaining, fighting, and otherwise carrying on.

I had been trying to teach my older son how to tell someone his phone number if there were ever an emergency. Our number has several digits that repeat so it can be a little difficult for a child to remember in the correct order. I was getting frustrated with myself because I couldn’t think of a good way to help him learn the numbers.

Right now, as I look around my house, I sit and wonder how in the world it ended up in such a state of disaster. What happened to the little elves that are supposed to come and clean up in the middle of the night? I have given in to the fact that my own two little elves (who, by the way, created most of the destruction) are going to have to chip in and help to bring our house back to a state of

My very first year of teaching, eleven years ago, I taught first grade. They were at an age where most of them were beginning to read, but they all still loved to be read to. I remember purchasing a boxed set of Junie B. Jones books, written by Barbara Park. I also remember starting to read a chapter or two each day to my students. I recall how much they snickered and laughed. Unfortunately,

It all starts with the baby book. Everyone told me that it would be much less complete than that of my first child. I told myself I would never let that happen. And yet, if you compare the two, indeed my first born’s has something written on every page. When you gaze upon my younger son’s book, it is immediately clear that something changed. Life has happened.

My kids, like most others this time of year, have been excited about the upcoming holiday for quite some time. The closer we get to Christmas, the more excited they become. And yes, I have seen a change in their behavior as well. They are getting more and more wound up. In fact, I fear my three-year-old may actually turn into a tangled ball of yarn if Christmas doesn’t arrive soon.

It is a week before Thanksgiving, and we started listening to Christmas music today. I used to make a rule in my own head that I would not start playing Christmas music until Black Friday. However, now that children are in the picture, this rule has been blown away with the wind and the snow.

My three-year-old, Elliot, hates to see his big brother leave on the school bus each morning. He cries and moans, “I wanna play with Brennen.” Over the next six hours, he then asks repeatedly if it is time to go get his brother off the bus. When the time finally arrives, Elliot is a ball of glee literally jumping up and down at the thought of Brennen coming home to play. As Brennen
