I recently read about an activity that I am going to try with my children this year for Advent. It is called a “Good Deeds Chain”. Due to the fact that our children are so young, I am going to change it a little bit to better meet our needs. I am hoping it will help make my children more aware of the actions they are taking and how they are treating each other.
To begin, cut a piece of purple construction paper into one inch strips along the shorter edge of the paper. Place the strips of paper into a basket along with a pen so that they are visible throughout the day. Explain to your family that you are going to help each other recognize when someone has done a good deed just as John the Baptist did good deeds for others as he prepared them for the coming of Jesus Christ. Each time a member of the family is ”caught”, write the action on a strip of paper. For example, “Aidan helped Madison button her coat.”
Fold the paper over to make a ring, and staple it together. Continue to add sections of chain throughout all of Advent. During the third week, switch to pink paper instead of purple. Your family will be amazed at how long the chain gets as the weeks go by.
Add the chain to a Christmas tree as garland or hang it in a prominent spot in your home. When a guest asks what it is for, allow your child to explain its purpose.
Note: If you do not celebrate Advent, you can still utilize this activity by using red and green paper instead.

It never fails. Each time our extended family is gathered for a special occasion, my mother-in-law, at some point during the festivities will take great delight in the misbehavior of our children. She will sometimes just snicker or chuckle to herself, but typically, she announces how happy she is to see that “The Mother’s Curse” has come true

My kids, like most others this time of year, have been excited about the upcoming holiday for quite some time. The closer we get to Christmas, the more excited they become. And yes, I have seen a change in their behavior as well. They are getting more and more wound up. In fact, I fear my three-year-old may actually turn into a tangled ball of yarn if Christmas doesn’t arrive soon.

Why is it that we, as human beings, seem to focus so much on the negative characteristics of a person? Perhaps it is because they seem to stick out more or maybe it is because the negative attributes elicit a more powerful emotional response. Whatever the reason, it takes practice and focus to concentrate and react to the positive attributes of a person. This includes those of our own children.

My family, including my mom and step-dad, recently returned from a much needed vacation to Orlando, Florida. While there, we visited Sea World, Walt Disney World and Gator Land. We were busy with activities from start to finish nearly each and every day. Since our days would be so packed, we wanted to take a planned, but flexible approach to our visits to these parks. The first day proved to b

Right now, it’s whining. My two boys, especially my older four-year-old, whine about everything. They whine if they don’t get their way. They whine if they want something. They whine…well…for reasons I don’t think I’ll ever understand. I don’t know if my toddler is getting it from my preschooler or the other way around. It may be that my preschooler
