If you decided to introduce the computer to your child at an early age, it can be difficult to find programs that are appropriate for their limited educational skills and muscle development. However, it is possible to find programs that are available for free and are designed with young children in mind.
You may have already heard of “Jump Start” computer games. These games are produced by a company called “Knowledge Adventure.” This company has procured a web site that offers free computer games online at http://www.knowledgeadventure.com/. For most of the games, you simply click on the icon, and the game will begin. However, some of the games require you to download a plug-in.
Games are available for a wide range of ages ranging from toddler through age six. There are arcade games, as well as math, science, spelling, word, reading, and animal games. You can select games by age, subject, or simply by clicking on the name of the game from a complete list.
It is recommended that you use a regular mouse as opposed to a synapse pad because a mouse is much easier to control. Young children may still need help pointing and clicking at first, but it doesn’t usually take very long for them to get the hang of it.
Another great program that helps with mouse control is the “Paint” program that is probably already on your computer. If not, or if you’d like something different, try the Tux 4 Kids web site and download their free “TuxPaint” software.

One way to begin this process is to provide your child with a search engine just for kids.

Whatever the reason, I am occasionally able to see beyond my prejudices when I find a good, educa
