Food for Thought
I have two little boys who could not be more different from each other. This point is exacerbated when it comes to food. Brennen, my three-year-old, refuses to try anything new. If it is green, it must taste bad. If it resembles a vegetable, it must taste bad. In fact, unless it is labeled “peanut butter and jelly”, “pizza”, or “hot dog” you might as well just skip the formality of putting it on a plate.
Elliot on the other hand, is a human trash compactor. This twenty-month-old child will eat just about anything you place before him. He would prefer to eat whatever is on an adult’s plate instead of traditional “kid food”. He loves spanakopita or any other exotic dish that even some adults refuse. (Although I would not use his tastes as a guideline for fine cuisine since he also likes to snack on dog food.)
How is it that two children with the same parents and the same food choices can be so different when it comes to food preferences? I feel it certainly illustrates the point that each person truly does have their own set of likes and dislikes and that exposure alone will not make a child like a food. This being said, I do believe that one day, Brennen will begin to willingly try new foods that are on the table, and he will realize that he likes more foods than he thought he did. I no longer force him to try foods, but instead offer him a variety of good food in hopes that, some time in the future, he will make the decision for himself to choose foods that are healthy and taste good too.
