Treasure Hunt

Pirates, scalawags, and treasure are popular themes right now.  Use this popularity to draw your child’s attention while helping him to develop listening skills.  Part of listening is being able to follow directions, which, of course, is a skill needed for kindergarten.  A made up treasure map can be a fun way to help your child practice these important skills.

Draw a simple treasure map on a piece of paper.  Include three or four places you must visit on the way to the treasure.  It could be as simple as the bathtub, the washing machine, and your child’s bed.  You can also make a treasure map where you must walk outside to several places near your home or even drive to various landmarks around town.  No matter which option you choose, be sure to select a “treasure” that is well hidden before you begin the quest with your child.

Include pictures on your map that your child will be able to interpret.  Before setting off for the first destination on the map, help your child identify the various places he must travel in order to reach the treasure, and be sure to establish the order in which he must move from place to place.

Celebrate wildly when you reach the treasure, and give your first mate a big high five for a job well done!
