When you are at home, you expect your child to listen to and follow the directions that you give her. However, has your child had any experience following directions that are given to her by other people who are in charge? This is a skill that, unfortunately, cannot be taught to her by her parents. However, it is fairly easy for you to ensure that she does master this skill before she enters kindergarten where she will be given instructions by the teacher on a routine basis. All you have to do is look at what she is interested in, and then find somewhere that offers lessons in that area. For example, if she loves to color and paint, look for art lessons. If she loves to splash in the bathtub, find a pool that offers swim lessons. Sporting lessons are available in just about every sport imaginable even for very young children, and in most cases, it is fairly easy to find an instructor to teach your child to play an instrument or even sing. In all of these venues, your child will learn how to listen attentively and then follow the directions of the teacher or coach. These are all great ways to practice for when she enters kindergarten.

When we think about what children learn in kindergarten, we often picture reciting the ABC’s, writing numbers, and coloring with vividly colored crayons. The vitally important skill of listening is often overlooked. Listening skills can and should be practiced even before children go to kindergarten. When children are able to recognize most of the letters of the alphabet, it is a good time to start helping them make the connection between letters and sounds. Try the following activity with your preschooler and make a game out of learning letter sounds.
Cover five large cubes with an uppercase letter of the alphabet written on each side. You will have four extra sides so repeat four of the vo

For many preschoolers, sitting down with a pencil and paper to practice writing letters isn’t exactly what they would choose to do on any given day of the week. However, as parents, we can still help our children practice these skills without crushing their sense of fun. Often, all it takes is coming up with a spin on the traditional pencil and paper activities to spark their interest. Th

In getting ready for kindergarten, it is important that children learn how to be responsible for their own belongings as well as items that the entire class uses together, such as art supplies, toys, and the classroom itself. In order to help children prepare for these new responsibilities, we, as parents, can help build these skills by having our children complete daily chores.

Emotions and feelings are a difficult concept for young children, and even adults, to understand. They are a natural part of being human, and feelings are never wrong to have. However, it is very important for children to learn that we must be able to control our feelings.

It would be impossible, of course, to give your child the solutions to every problem they will ever face, and doing so would not allow your child to learn how to deal with the problems themselves. Instead, help your child learn how to approach a problem by trying out different ideas and strategies.

It was easy to grasp the concept that children could learn while having fun, but I was not prepared for how excited students would be to dive into their studies.
