Even at this young age, your child has probably already had experiences painting with their fingers and paintbrushes. They may have used watercolors, temperas, and finger paints. Here is another way to paint using similar mediums but in a new way.
Painting with ice cubes gives children an opportunity to paint while experiencing a new sensation. While holding a popsicle stick, the color flows as the sliding ice glides across the surface on which they are painting.
There are several ways to paint with ice cubes. Here are a few for you to try at home:
- Make regular ice cubes, but insert a popsicle stick to use as a handle. Place a few small puddles of paint on a piece of heavy paper and have your child slide the ice cube through the paint.
- Using plain ice cubes with a stick, slide the ice cubes over swirl designs created using washable markers. The colors will blend slightly.
- Make ice cubes with food color to create a watercolor effect.
- Use tempera paint in the ice cubes to give the paint a more vivid color.
Although any of these ideas would be great fun completed indoors, try taking the activity outside on a warm summer day. Hang a sturdy piece of paper on a fence or wall, and watch the colors drip as the ice cubes melt.
