Brennen has light blonde hair. Elliot has brown hair. Brennen eats like a bird. Elliot eats like a horse. Brennen likes structure and order. Elliot prefers spontaneity and chaos. These two children couldn’t be more different, and yet, they are brothers. Perhaps it has to do with birth order or maybe God just wanted to chuckle at his own creative abilities. Whatever the reason, my boys are polar opposites. Apart from fighting with each other, I can’t think of any similarity between the two of them.
All of these differences can be both good and bad. I definitely would not want clones. I am glad that Elliot doesn’t just follow along with whatever his older brother “suggests”. However, it can sometimes be difficult trying to meet the wants and needs of two little boys who never seem to want or need the same thing.
Currently, my biggest struggle is trying to adapt to two different learning styles. Brennen has a longer attention span and has the memory of an elephant. Elliot, on the other hand, can’t repeat the name of the color of his sippy cup two seconds after you tell him the name. Brennen prefers to know the schedule of the activities I have planned for him whereas Elliot is more able to go with the flow and participate in whatever I put before him.
My boys are so different. It can be difficult, challenging, and downright frustrating. And yet, I love them both the same.
