Whenever I go to the library for storytime, I try to go on the puppet show days. The children always love to listen to the stories, but there is something magical and wonderous that takes place for them as they enter the world of make-believe without having to turn on the television.
Puppets are not only great for children to enjoy as they listen to a story, but they are also fantastic tools that can be used for checking your child’s understanding of a story. You can use store-bought puppets or simple, paper-bag, home-made puppets. Either way, children will love re-enacting a story they have just heard.
You can be part of the show or allow them to put on a show for you. As the show is taking place, ask your child questions about the characters, setting, conflict, and resolution. If your child isn’t sure about any aspect of the story, encourage her to go back and re-read the story with you in order to find the answers to your questions. Identifying these parts of a story and re-reading are two strategies that your child will be able to utilize when she begins reading on her own and is checking her own understanding of the story.
