A Teacher for Brennen

My four-year-old son, Brennen, attended a wonderful preschool program last year.  There was a lead teacher and an assistant teacher in his classroom, and both were great teachers.  However, the lead teacher really knew how to adapt to each child’s personality.  My best friend’s little girl, Avery, is very brash, and this teacher was able to scold her with a harsh tone which was definitely the best way to discipline her.  If you speak softly to Avery, she will not respond.  My son, however, is much more shy.  When Brennen did something he was not supposed to, the teacher would get down on his level and gently, yet directly, tell him what he did wrong.  Brennen responded extremely well to this type of discipline.

The assistant teacher in this classroom was not as skilled at adapting her styles to the personalities of the children.  She tended to simply raise her voice no matter whom she was disciplining.  This strategy did not work well for my child.  Brennen would simply clam up and turn his eyes to the floor.

This year when choosing a classroom for Brennen, I deliberately looked at the personalities of the teachers in the classroom.  Since the point of a preschool program is to help a child grow and flourish, I do not want Brennen in a classroom where he will be too afraid to communicate with the teachers.  Although it will not always be possible to choose his teachers, I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity while it is here.
